Why Does Your Tan Fade Quicker On Your Face?

Our tan fades quicker on our face because of many reasons. The skin on our face is thinner than the rest of our body and is exposed to our environment and typically endures more "care". Freaking washing, exfoliating, use of anti-aging creams, astringents, make-up, and other harsh products tend to break down the tan much quicker. Dry skin also plays a role in a faster fade.

Skin Preparation

Drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated
Exfoliate and clean your face
Remove any unwanted facial hair
Get any spa or beauty services done prior to your spray tan
Moisturize your face
Wear sunscreen daily
DISCONTINUE PRODUCTS WITH RETINOL

Retinol/Retinoid/Tretinoin

These ingredients increase cell turnover which will fade your spray tan quicker than the rest of your body. It may also make it look blotchy due to side effects of use (irritation, redness, dryness, etc.).

My recommendation, is to stop using products with these ingredients about 3 days prior to your spray tan as well as for the duration of your spray tan.

Keep Skin Care Simple

I've recently been under the care of a dermatologist for "maturing skin & melasma" and she recommended a simple skin care regime that consisted of only three steps/products:

Gentle Face Cleanser
I personally use the store brand of Cerve. Avoid soaps with alcohol and mineral oils.

Vitamin C Serum

My dermatologist recommended SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic but I opted for a more affordable option of Drunk Elephant C-Firma Fresh Vitamin-C Day Serum. Vitamin C is safe to use on sunless tanned skin and helps with fine lines and wrinkles, dullness and uneven texture, loss of firmness and elasticity.

Sunscreen

My dermatologist recommended EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40. It is gentle and suitable for sensitive skin will not ruin your spray tan. It protects against UVA/UVB, has mineral-based zinc oxide, doesn't clog pores, is fragrance-fee, and oil-free.

Bakuchiol

GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO RETINOL with no adverse effects
Suitable for all skin types
Targets - instantly helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Plumps - provides 24-hours of continuous hydration

I have personally started using Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum and LOVE IT!

Tanning Solution Ingredients

The active ingredient in all sunless solutions is DHA which naturally dries your skin out. Sunless formulas have come a long way from where they used to be and many have benefiting ingredients that help improve your skin's appearance.

The solutions that I use for my clients have:

Hyaluronic Acid- anti-aging and collagen stimulating effects
Kakadu Plum- nourish and cleanse skin with acne-fighting vitamin C
Green Tea Extract- protection against harmful UV damage
White Tea Extract- helps naturally regenerate skin's youthful, healthy appearance
Coffee Extract- boosts hydration and skin elasticity
Elderflower Extract- soothes skin and fights age-causing free radicals

Keep Me SunKissed!

To ensure your face stays tan for the duration of your spray tan, I recommend using SunnaTans' Keep Me Sunkissed Face Tan Water, specially formulated for your facial skin with nourishing, anti-aging ingredients like hyaluronic acid, witch hazel water, red maple extract, and the natural scent of vanilla fruit water. It will leave your skin hydrated, even, toned and glowing without any sticky finish.
