Frequently Asked Spray Tanning Questions

Planning

What is an airbrush spray tan?

An airbrush spray tan is a sunless tanning method where a fine mist of tanning solution is applied to your skin using a handheld airbrush gun. The solution contains DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a natural ingredient that reacts with the amino acids in your skin to create a beautiful, natural-looking tan.

What are the benefits of an airbrush spray tan?

An airbrush spray tan offers several benefits, including:

1. Evens Out Skin Tone: It provides a uniform color that helps even out your skin tone, giving you a smooth, radiant appearance.

2. Camouflages Skin Imperfections: The tan can help camouflage imperfections such as scars, blemishes, and stretch marks, enhancing the overall look of your skin.

3. Boosts Confidence: Achieving a sun-kissed glow can boost your confidence and make you feel great about your appearance.

4. Customizable and Natural-Looking: The airbrush technique allows for a personalized shade that complements your skin tone, ensuring a natural and flattering result.

5. Safe Alternative to UV Exposure: It provides a beautiful tan without the risks associated with UV exposure, such as skin damage and premature aging.

When should I schedule my spray tan appointment?

If you are tanning for an event, we recommend getting your spray tan 2-3 days before. If you are tanning for a trip, we recommend getting your tan as close to your departure date as possible.

What should I do to prepare for my spray tan?

For the best results, exfoliate your skin thoroughly 24 hours before your appointment to remove dead skin cells. Avoid using any lotions, oils, or deodorants on the day of your tan, as they can create a barrier that affects the application. Wear loose, dark clothing to your appointment to avoid rubbing off the tan while it develops.

What about scheduling my other beauty services?

All other beauty services, such as manicures, pedicures, hair appointments, massages, facials, and hair removal, should be done 24-48 hours before your spray tan appointment. This ensures that your tan remains even and undisturbed by any other treatments.

I'm under 18, can I still get a spray tan?

Yes! Our products are safe for all ages! However, if you are under 18, you will need to have your parent/guardian sign our release form before we can start your spray tanning session. If they won't be coming to your appointment with you, we can send you a printable version of our form. Please email cassandra@cassandrabouvia.com to request a copy it 🙂

Services

Where is your studio located?

Our cozy boutique home studio is nestled in the Stratford Park Subdivision of North Knoxville. Located downstairs, the studio features a comfortable seating area, a restroom, and a private room dedicated to spray tanning and teeth whitening appointments, ensuring a relaxing and personalized experience.

Where should I park?

You can park in our driveway or along the street in front of the house. Please remember to leave space for our friendly mail carrier.

What should I expect upon arrival?

I will greet you at the front door and escort you to the studio. We'll have a brief consultation to choose the ideal solution for your skin type, tone, and desired look. Your spray tan includes soft dry exfoliation, a pH-balancing cleanse, your choice of solution, soft glow contour, a post-hydration spray, setting powder, and complimentary treats and beverages.

How long does the appointment take?

Appointment times vary based on the services you book. A spray tan appointment lasts 30 minutes, allowing time for consultation and our all-inclusive service. If you book both a spray tan and teeth whitening, the total appointment time is 1.5 hours.

Who applies my spray tan?

Your airbrush spray tan will be applied by me, a seasoned master-certified spray tan artist from the only nationally accredited program. I take pride in my professionalism and strive to create a welcoming, judgment-free environment for a comfortable and positive sunless tanning experience.

Do I have to have my face sprayed?

No, it's completely optional! However, it is included with all full-body tans. If a client prefers not to have their face sprayed, we usually apply a light mist to the neck for a natural, seamless look.

Post- Tan

Will I turn ORANGE?

No, the solutions we use are specifically designed to deliver natural-looking results. We offer two premium sunless solution lines, each ensuring a beautifully natural and even tan.

What should I avoid after my spray tan?

Between the application of your tan and your first shower, please avoid: 1) contact with liquids, 2) sweating, 3) skin to skin contact, and 3) wearing tight clothing. This means no makeup, moisturizer, tight bras, athletic leggings, or any activities that could cause sweating or contact with liquids, including washing dishes or laundry, or accidental spills.

Will I ruin my spray tan if I sleep in it?

f you plan to sleep in your spray tan, we recommend wearing loose-fitting clothing to bed. If you tend to run warm while you sleep, we strongly suggest opting for an express tan to avoid concerns about sweating. Any skin-to-skin contact can create friction and sweat, which might affect your tan, so it's best to avoid direct skin contact with others as well. 😉

How long will my spray tan last?

Your custom tan will deliver a gorgeous, glowing result for 7-10 days (or potentially longer due to our hydrating ingredients!), provided you keep your skin moisturized and avoid products with harsh chemicals, exfoliants, and bleaching agents. To maximize the longevity of your tan, inquire about our line of natural products designed specifically for sunless tanning. Using these recommended products will help ensure longer-lasting results and a more natural, even fade.

How do I maintain my sunless tan?

When you have a spray tan, avoid using harsh soaps, exfoliants, and products not specifically designed for sunless tanning (including washcloths and loofahs). Pat your skin dry. For the best results, use our ‘sunless safe’ body wash when showering. Always apply a ‘sunless safe’ moisturizer after your shower to keep your skin hydrated. Proper moisturization will extend the life of your tan and ensure a more natural, even fade. To refresh your color as it begins to fade, we recommend using our sunless mousse.

Can I shave while I have a spray tan?

It's best to complete any hair removal at least a few hours before your spray tan appointment. However, if shaving after your tan is unavoidable, wait at least 24 hours before doing so and be gentle. Shaving acts as a mild exfoliant, so take care to avoid removing your tan.

How do I maintain my spray tan on vacation?

We highly recommend scheduling your appointment for the day before your trip to ensure your tan is fresh! However, keep in mind that sweating, salt water, and high chlorine levels in resort pools can cause your spray tan to fade more quickly. To maintain your sunless glow, you have a couple of options: 1) Stay cool and avoid the pool, or 2) Bring along our sunless mousse and reapply as needed. Remember to moisturize daily, use sunless-safe sunscreen, pat your skin dry, and enjoy your trip!

Health Concerns

Is spray tanning safe?

Spray tanning is endorsed by the Skin Cancer Organization, the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Dermatology. Additionally, the FDA has tested and approved DHA for use on the skin. Spray tanning is the only healthy-conscious tan option.

Can I get a spray tan while pregnant?

Yes! We frequently tan expectant mothers for maternity photoshoots, baby showers, babymoons, and a beautiful everyday glow. While spray tanning during pregnancy is a personal choice, we recommend consulting with your doctor beforehand. An ingredient list can be provided to you upon request.

Can I get a spray tan while breastfeeding?

Absolutely, you can still get a spray tan while breastfeeding! We recommend wearing a strapless bra or covering your chest area during the application—breast pads work well, or we can provide pasties for your convenience. We also offer rapid options that allow you to shower just a few hours after your visit, so you can return to your normal feeding routine. We’ll help determine the best option for you during your consultation.

Can I get a spray tan if I have a skin condition or a history of any cancer?

If you have a skin condition or a history of any cancer, it's important to consult with your healthcare provider before getting a spray tan. While spray tanning solutions are generally safe for most people, those with certain medical conditions or histories should seek medical advice to ensure it is appropriate for them. If you have any concerns or specific needs, please inform us, and we can discuss how to best accommodate you during your appointment.
